International Conference ‘Mountains: Biodiversity, landscapes and cultures

Aim

The 2nd International Conference “Mountains: Biodiversity, Landscapes, and Cultures” is designed to foster connections between knowledge sources and cultivate narratives, pathways and visions for a sustainable future.

Agenda

The main conference will be preceded by a day of informative workshops and an excursion to explore the natural beauty of Baku and its nearby areas, which may include the surrounding landscapes. The conference will feature a diverse range of sessions, with a particular focus on mountains.

The critical discussion will be led by experts from the United Nations Environment Programme, the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment, and the Mountain Research Initiative.

The four core topics will be explored:

 1. Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment:

This session will delve into the comprehensive assessment of biodiversity in mountainous regions, emphasising the importance of preserving these unique ecosystems. Experts from the United Nations Environment Programme, the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment, and the Mountain Research Initiative will lead discussions and provide insights.

2. Global ecological problems:

Our environment faces several problems, and many of these seem to be worsening with time, bringing us into a time of a true environmental crisis. It is therefore becoming increasingly important to raise awareness of the existence of these issues, as well as what can be done to reduce their negative impact.

3. Mountain cultures

Mountain culture is a rich and diverse aspect of human history that has been shaped by the unique landscapes and resources of mountain regions. Whether it’s the music, cuisine, festivals, or art, the traditions of mountain communities provide a window into their unique way of life.

4. Mountain tourism and economic impacts

Mountains are important tourism destinations worldwide and attract visitors for their scenic beauty, sports attractions and rich cultural heritage. Tourism represents a source of income and economic opportunities for remote rural mountain communities. It can also help to revitalise local traditions and food systems.
