A@A Knowledge Network ‘Solution Showcase’: the cryosphere edition
Date and time
Tuesday, October 29 · 1 – 2pm GMT (London)
Summary
Join us for the first Adaptation at Altitude Knowledge Network ‘solution showcase’! This showcase will focus on the cryosphere, with a series of speed talks on adaptation technologies, approaches, or processes that are addressing the impacts of climate change on glaciers, snow, ice, and permafrost in mountainous regions.
Agenda
Join us for ‘solution showcases’ from:
- Zhanar Raimbekova (Senior Lecturer at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University) on experiences in Kazakhstan concerning GLOF risk reduction strategies. Zhanar will highlight world-leading solutions, such as mudflow protection dams and engineering efforts to lower the level of glacial lakes.
This will be followed by a presentation from Dr. Stefan Schneiderbauer who leads the Bolzano/Italy office of GLOMOS (Global Mountain Safeguard Research), a joint programme of the United Nations University and Eurac Research. Stefan will present some of GLOMOS’s planned activities in the cryosphere and share the objectives of upcoming research.
Want to share your cryosphere solutions?
Does your climate change adaptation project/initiative in mountains:
- Explore and apply technologies, approaches, and/or processes to adapt to the actual or expected impacts on and risks posed by glacial retreat, snow and ice melt, and/or permafrost thaw?
- Harness benefits to livelihoods, economies, and the environment?
- Demonstrate financial, economic, and environmental sustainability and have the potential to be feasibly scaled‐up and duplicated in other mountain regions?
If so, we want to hear from you!
We will feature solutions that meet the criteria on our Adaptation at Altitude Solutions Portal and highlight them in a visual output for the 2025 UN International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation.

About the A@A Knowledge Network
The Adaptation at Altitude programme, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), seeks to support mountain communities and those working with them by improving the knowledge of appropriate climate change adaptation strategies in the mountains, and transferring that knowledge through science–policy platforms to inform decision-making in national, regional and global policy processes.
The Adaptation at Altitude (A@A) Knowledge Network is a global community through which we can share experiences and knowledge on adaptation in the mountains and collaborate to accelerate the uptake of innovative solutions. Want to keep informed about our upcoming meetings and events? Find more information and details on how to get involved on our A@A Knowledge Network homepage.
